Fond memories of Italian dining

There’s nothing quite like a proper sit down Italian meal. If it’s traditional fare, it’ll be hearty but straightforward, none of this fancy nonsense you get regurgitated in the shops and restaurants over here. One of my favourite memories of meals in Italy comes from Taormina, a smallish town on the north east coast of Sicily. It’s a great place- really wonderful panoramic views of the Meditteranean and excellent climbing all around. The perfect excuse to work up a very healthy appetite!

We went to a restaurant right in the centre of the town (close to the Timeo) and it was so atmospheric. The place was filled with locals, which is always a good sign, and the menu only had about four choices. As a quick aside, a pet peeve of mine is ordering from a menu that looks like it caters for every single dish under the sun. How on earth can that be as fresh or dedicated as a place that only offers a small selection? Anyway, I can’t remember exactly what I had, but I know it was based around a locally caught fish. The wine we had with the meal was chosen by our waiter and complemented the meal superbly.

Of course, a true Italian meal out would not be complete without a (complimentary!) aperatif. We had a very tasty glug of some home brewed lemoncello.
